10. The Greatest Hits (2024)

The Greatest Hits (2024).

Written and directed by Ned Benson, The Greatest Hits follows Lucy Boynton’s Harriet Gibbons, whose love for music and its ability to transport the listener to another place becomes far too real when she discovers that music can, quite literally, transport her through time. Using her time travel to relive a former partner, a new love interrupts her routine, with the past and present colliding both chaotically and romantically.

Given the movie’s impressively intriguing premise, it would have been easy for the product itself to fail to deliver. However, The Greatest Hits takes its quirky premise and grounds it in a romantic story that feels both relatable and unlike anything you’ve seen before. Fun and sweet, The Greatest Hits is a wonderful movie for a lazy afternoon.

9. The Lost City (2022)

The Lost City (2022).

Featuring an all-star cast that includes the likes of Sandra Bullock, Channing Tatum, and Daniel Radcliffe, The Lost City follows Bullock’s Loretta Sage, an author with a penchant for tales about far-flung places and exotic lands. Unable to decipher between her work and reality, an enigmatic billionaire, Abigail Fairfax (Radcliffe), kidnaps her hoping she will lead him to the lost treasure in one of her most recent stories.

Bags of fun that never takes itself too seriously, The Lost City is a wild ride with quirky characters and eye-popping visuals that never mess with its thrill-friendly pace. The entire cast clearly has the time of their lives, with their energy bouncing off the screen and into the hearts of viewers.

8. 50 First Dates (2004)

50 First Dates (2004).

Whether you love him or hate him, Adam Sandler’s comedic intelligence is undeniable, with 50 First Dates considered by some to be one of his best. Sandler plays Henry, a bachelor who avoids commitment like the plague. However, his promise to stay alone faces its toughest test in the form of Lucy (Drew Barrymore), who Henry surprisingly believes to be the love of his life.

Thinking his life has changed, Henry is bamboozled by the truth that Lucy suffers from short-term memory loss, leading to every date becoming their first. Touching and laugh-out-loud funny, 50 First Dates manages to neatly toe the line between comical absurdity and heartfelt romance, with it nigh-on impossible not to root for the triumph of the central couple. Barrymore and Sandler have a surprising amount of chemistry in a film that will whisk you away to a land of nervous excitement about meeting your first love the best compliment the movie can pay.

7. The Proposal (2009)

The Proposal (2009).

Before he was donning Deadpool’s suit and owning a Welsh soccer team, Ryan Reynolds was helping Sandra Bullock avoid deportation. The Proposal stars the pair as Margaret and Andrew, with Andrew the budding young assistant to Margaret’s cutthroat editor. However, the tables quickly flip when Margaret realizes she must marry to avoid losing her visa status and employs Andrew to do the deed.

Funny, fierce, and often flamboyant, The Proposal is a shining example of how to triumph with the rom-com formula. Both Bullock and Reynolds have excellent romantic and comedic chemistry, although it is Betty White’s 90-year-old Gammy that steals the show. Set against the backdrop of the gorgeous Alaska, The Proposal is well worth your engagement.

6. Fire Island (2022)

Fire Island (2022).

Bowen Yang (Saturday Night Live) and Joel Kim Booster (Loot) dazzle in Andrew Ahn’s Fire Island, a glamorous queer romance that follows a group of friends as they return to the popular vacation spot attempting to make this summer the best one yet. Written by Booster, who crafted a shrewdly witty script, Fire Island is unexpectedly heart-filled.

Plenty of recognizable names and faces appear in Fire Island, including icons Margaret Cho, Matt Rogers (I Love That For You), and Conrad Ricamora (How to Get Away with Murder), providing an entertaining love story that is both steamy and endearing.

5. Under the Eiffel Tower (2018)

Under The Eiffel Tower (2018).

Bursting with incredible comedic talent, Under the Eiffel Tower is a romantic comedy inspired by a true story. Directed by Archie Borders, who co-wrote the script with David Henry and Judith Godrèche, Under the Eiffel Tower walks the line between comedy and drama with a story about wine not too dissimilar to Sideways.

Matt Walsh stars as a sad and newly jobless man having a midlife crisis, which leads him on a journey of self-exploration across the French countryside. Under the Eiffel Tower co-stars Godrèche, along with Reid Scott, David Wain (Wet Hot American Summer), Gary Cole, and Michaela Watkins (Casual).

4. Rye Lane (2023)

Rye Lane (2023).

David Jonsson and Vivian Oparah (Class) co-star in Rye Lane, a charming romantic comedy directed by Raine Allen-Miller. Rye Lane follows the two twentysomethings through a chance encounter, bonding over recent break-ups, welcoming their budding relationship in a sweet and humorous story that unfolds throughout a single day.

Nathan Bryon and Tom Melia co-wrote Rye Lane with a clever tone that fully embeds the audience in a particular neighborhood in Peckham in South London, leading critics to compare the film to writer/director Spike Lee and his iconic feature Do the Right Thing.

3. Good Luck to You, Leo Grande (2022)

Good Luck To You, Leo Grande (2022).

Director Sophie Hyde brings a keen eye to Katy Brand’s moving and clever script for the uniquely beautiful film Good Luck to You, Leo Grande. Starring Emma Thompson (Cruella) as Nancy, a retired widow who decides to finally become acquainted with her own sexuality, Good Luck to You, Leo Grande eagerly and earnestly explores the realities of aging, womanhood, and sex.

In an effort to find Nancy’s own agency, the uptight and methodical former school teacher hires a gorgeous and gentle sex worker who goes by the name Leo Grande (Daryl McCormack). While clearly a film aimed at an older audience, Good Luck to You, Leo Grande is a gracefully progressive movie with lessons for women of all ages.

2. The Valet (2022)

The Valet (2022).

Eugenio Derbez (CODA) brings his special brand of humor to The Valet, elevating the overused tropes in this traditional rom-com from director Richard Wong. Wong’s background as a cinematographer provides him with the unique ability to capture every instance of humor and hijink in The Valet.

Samara Weaving (Bill & Ted Face the Music), who has more experience in action and horror than romance or comedies, is paired with Derbez and truly reveals a layer of humor and heart through the ridiculous situations on screen. Max Greenfield (New Girl) and Riverdale’s Marisol Nichols also appear in The Valet, which builds on the pretend-boyfriend trope when a movie star (Weaving) enlists a valet (Derbez) to pose as her lover.

1. Palm Springs (2020)

Palm Springs (2020).

n a nod to Groundhog Day, the film Palm Springs features a time loop. While forced to live the same day repeatedly, Sarah, played by Cristin Milloti, and Nyles, played by Andy Samberg, begin to fall in love. They attempt a seemingly endless amount of ways to escape the time loop where they are forced to attend Sarah’s sister’s wedding, but to no avail.

This film is an intriguing take on the time loop premise. Usually, just one person is trapped, but this adds another person in the know about what’s going on. This premise helps bond them and draw them to each other as they fight to get their lives back. If you love alternate reality films, Palm Springs is a must-see.
